To my daughter, on your birthday

Oh dear Grace,

My magical, beautiful, sweet-as-sugar little girl. You are ONE today, and I don’t think your mommy’s heart can handle it.

It seems like just yesterday we were at the hospital hearing your cry and seeing your perfect face for the very first time. Your daddy and I fell in love with you in that moment, and fall even more in love each and every day.

You fill our lives and everyone around you with SO. MUCH. JOY.

You smile all the time — as if your smile is as effortless as each breath you take. You’re talkative, and cuddly, and adventurous, and determined. You like to pick out books, explore the toys in your room by taking them in and out of their bins, WALK all around, dance to music, play peek-a-boo and chase with daddy. You say, “mommy” and “daddy” and “hi.” You’re a very good eater and love fruits, avocado, and especially cheese. You love walks and playground time, and watching and waving at all the kids.

“Her eyes are so big and beautiful.” We hear these words often.

And with those blueish-greenish eyes, you take in the whole world. You watch and notice and see details and people and marvel at everything. Hold on to this, baby girl. This life is so grand and I want you to keep exploring it, savoring it, and loving the beauty that surrounds you.

Your life is just beginning and there’s so much ahead. I pray you dance and twirl your way through it all. Enjoy every moment, love well, and be kind.

Daddy and I will be with you each step of the way.
Go ahead and keep shining, you’re ONE on this day.

Happy birthday, Gracie girl.

I’ll love you forever,
Mommy

“Of all the things my hands have held, the best by far is you.”
